At the time of the RCAHMS photographic survey, August 1998, the lighthouse compound included a Sundial, Flagpole, and Keepers' House. The lighthouse itself was painted a plain white without any red strips. The lintel over the door to the tower gives a date of 1901. The contacts at the time were a Mr and Mrs R Terry. This survey was carried out in order to enhance the existing holdings of the National Monuments Record of Scotland. There was also, at the time of the survey, a proposal to demolish the complex.
