Barns Ness, Lighthouse View from SE

SC 433774

Description Barns Ness, Lighthouse View from SE

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 433774

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Barns Ness Lighthouse, Dunbar, East Lothian This is a comparatively late lighthouse, in Scottish terms. It was erected by the Northern Lighthouse Board, and designed by their engineer, DA Stevenson. This view shows the tapering circular-section tower on the left, with a store room and the keepers' houses to the right. The flat roofs are characteristic of Northern Lighthouse Board practice of the period. Barns Ness was one of the first of the Northern Lighthouse Board's lights to be automated, a procedure completed by the time this photograph was taken. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
