Detail of example of mortsafe in Greyfriars Churchyard
Typed passage on verso reads "A Relic of Body Snatching in Greyfriars Churchyard, Edinburgh. From 1771 till the trial in 1828 of Burke (of the firm of Burke and Hare) the Scottish capital was notorious for 'the most horrid and unchristian actions of the grave makers, their raising and selling of the dead, abhorred by Turks and heathens'. One provision made to guard against this practise was to cover over the graves with heavy iron bars, putting the gravestones themselves on top of this grille work, as shown."
