Scope and Content Mausoleum of Sir George Mackenzie of Roseneath, Greyfriars burial ground, Edinburgh This elegant mausoleum commemorates Sir George Mackenzie, lawyer and Lord Advocate of Scotland, who founded the Advocates' Library in 1682. For his zealous prosecution of the Covenanters, enemies of the King, he gained the nickname of 'Bluidy Mackenzie'. The mausoleum takes the form of a large rotunda, divided into eight bays. Small windows called 'lucarnes' pierce the stone roof to light the interior. Above the north-facing doorway, the lintel is decorated with emblems signifying death and mortality. Designed and built by James Smith, the mausoleum was repaired in 1893 by Mackenzie's descendants. As a 'dare', it is said boys from Heriot's Hospital would shout through the door 'Bluidy Mackenzie, come oot if ye daur/Lift the sneck and draw the bar'! Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
