Scope and Content Monument commemorating the Martyrs of the Covenant, Greyfriars burial ground, Edinburgh Greyfriars is closely associated with the cause of the Covenanters. The signing of the first Covenant took place here in 1638, and in 1679 part of the churchyard was used as an open air prison following the defeat of the Covenanters at the Bothwell Brig. This monument, erected in 1771, replaces one set up in 1706 which can be seen in Huntly House Museum. Following Bothwell Brig, as many as 100 Covenanters were tried and executed and buried in a trench running west from the base of this monument. The Covenant was a protest against the imposition of an Anglican-style liturgy onto the Church of Scotland. In 1660, the Restoration brought about the renewed persecution of the Covenanters which only ended with the overthrow of James VII & II in 1690. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
