Archaeology Notes

NS15SW 10 11349 53408

A trench, 5' long x 4' deep was dug in an E-facing cave at the Hawk's Neb (NS 113 534). Kitchen midden refuse was found, but no artifacts except for what was probably a tinker's pipe, found near the surface. Hearth levels were also revealed by the section.

D N Marshall 1938.

NS 1135 5341 This cave measures 1.5m wide by 2.0m high at its entrance and at approximately 3.5m within it becomes a narrow fissure.

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (BS), 3 November 1976.

This site was noted during a coastal zone assessment survey undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd to characterise the state of coastal erosion and the threat it poses to cultural heritage sites. A gazetteer in the report included a note of existing records and new sites when discovered. Where the site was located, notes included condition, period/date and recommendations.

(Commissioned by The Scape Trust and Firth of Clyde Forum on behalf of Historic Scotland).

M Cressey and M Johnson 2004 (MS/2256).

This cave is generally as described by the Ordnance Survey except there are the remains of a stone wall over 3m in length and up to 1m in height across its entrance. Midden material is visible both inside the cave and on the slope immediately outside it.

Visited by RCAHMS (AGCH, IP), 17 March 2009.
