Activities

Desk Based Assessment (17 June 1976)

NS05NW 5 0461 5817.

There is a standing stone, 5ft high, placed above the head of Scalpsie Bay (name: NS 05 57) and NE of Clachan Ard fort (NS05NW 3).

Information from OS (IF) 17 June 1976

J N Marshall 1934.

Field Visit (18 November 1976)

There are numerous small pillars of living rock in the area to the NE of Clachan Ard fort (NS05NW 3) and especially at NS 0461 5817. However, none can be identified as a standing stone.

Visited by OS (T R G) 18 November 1976.

Field Visit (6 May 2009)

The exact location of the ‘standing stone’ noted to by Marshall in 1934 is not recorded, and there are no other standing stones in the area to which he might have been referring. In 1976 the Ordnance Survey implied that Marshall may have mistaken a natural pillar of rock in the area NS 0461 5817 for a standing stone. However, there is no evidence to suggest that this is the case.

Visited by RCAHMS (AGCH, JH) 6 May 2009.
