(NS 0443 2262) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map, (1924)

This Clyde group, chambered cairn has been much robbed. The remaining part is 2-3ft high, turf-covered, but bears little relation to the original plan as it has been reduced by ploughing and by a track across the SW side. It has had field-gathered stones added to it. Its present extent is about 77ft N-S by 54ft E-W,but when seen by Bryce (1902) it extended farther, 34ft E of the chamber.

The chamber, reduced to only 5 side slabs, is aligned N-S, with an entrance at the N end.

If it is correct to identify this cairn with that referred to by McArthur (1861) as Largiebeg (c/f NS02SE 2) it was "denuded of its stones, exposing a range of chambers containing several urns of unbaked clay, filled with earth and calcined bones" - now lost - some years before he wrote.

Source: A S Henshall 1972; T H Bryce 1902; J McArthur 1861.

The remains of this chambered cairn, generally as described and planned by Miss Henshall, are situated on a low eminence in regularly cultivated land. A quantity of field clearance material has been dumped on it.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (T R G) 25 November 1977.
