Archaeology Notes

NR62SE 18 6889 2400.

NR 688 239 Enclosure, In broken uncultivated ground towards the foot of the S slopes of Ranachan Hill and 185m N of North Craigs farmhouse, there are the remains of an enclosure measuring 33.5m by 25m within a wall 2.4m to 3.0m thick. The wall has been heavily robbed, and only occasional facing-stones remain; it follows the crest of a low knoll, and has an entrance on the WNW opening into the lowest part of the enclosure. The interior is covered with heather interspersed with patches of bare rock, and shows no trace of structures.

RCAHMS 1971, visited 1965

NR 6889 2400. The remains are generally as described and planned by RCAHMS. The situation on a low knoll on the shoulder of a hill provides limited natural defence, yet the wall is positioned to maximise the potential of the site probably indicating a defensive function. The wall is severely robbed, but the occasional basal stones of the outer face where visible are large, and typical of fort construction. The position of the entrance is uncertain as the west arc is disfigured by spoil from the construction of a pond. (See also NR62NE 23 and NR61SW 3).

Visible on RAF AP's (106G/Scot/UK 157: 3030-1, flown 1946).

Surveyed at 1:10 000 and 1:2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 13 December 1977.
