The remains of this farmstead comprise the remains of four rectangular buildings and associated enclosures; the largest building measures 19.3m by 6m over wall-footings up to 1m thick. To the S of the farmstead there is a small area of rig-and-furrow cultivation.

Field Visit (28 September 1989)

NO56NE 24.01 5702 6985

This settlement comprises three single-cell buildings, two large and one small, each of which has grass covered stone footings 0.3m high and is attached to an enclosure that is roughly quadrilateral on plan. The three units are juxtaposed in a line on a N-S axis, which is encompassed by an enclosure bank on the N, E and S. The E side of this enclosure is formed by a lynchet, which fronts a level terrace at the foot of the field above the settlement.

NO56NE 24.01 NO 5701 6985 Buildings; Enclosures

NO56NE 24.02 NO 5702 6975 Rig

This settlement is situated on the W slope of the Hill of Edzell about 50m from the public road and 450m SE of Margie Farm. Most of the land around the settlement is arable, but a narrow strip of land to the S has the remains of rig-and-furrow cultivation upon it.

The settlement was not occupied in 1766, according to an estate plan of Margie Farm carried out for the Earl of Panmure (SRO RHP 1665/19). A strip of grass between two arable furlongs on the plan at the correct location would indicate that the settlement had been abandoned by this date.
