Archaeology Notes

NO43NE 6 4612 3509.

(NO 4612 3509) Murroes Church was given to Arbroath Abbey by the Earl of Angus in 1211-4. The present church was built in 1648; it is a small, plain structure, with an aisle on the N. Jougs are fitted in to the S wall.

Over the door in the W wall of the aisle is a stone dated 1642. A fragment of Class II cross-slab was found in 1896 when levelling the churchyard. It is sculptured with two serpentine creatures and interlaced work. It is now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no: IB 166).

A J Warden 1880-5; J Anderson 1897; J R Allen and J Anderson 1903.

Activities

Field Visit (14 May 1958)

Murroes church is an entirely modern structure and from a panel dated 1848, in the S wall, would appear to have been built then. (The date '1648' quoted by Warden seems to be a misprint.) The panel dated '1642', and the jougs, are built into the W wall of the N aisle.

Visited by OS (J L D) 14 May 1958.

For Pictish symbol stone, see NO43NE 6.01.
