(NO 4612 3509) Murroes Church was given to Arbroath Abbey by the Earl of Angus in 1211-4. The present church was built in 1648; it is a small, plain structure, with an aisle on the N. Jougs are fitted in to the S wall.

Over the door in the W wall of the aisle is a stone dated 1642. A fragment of Class II cross-slab was found in 1896 when levelling the churchyard. It is sculptured with two serpentine creatures and interlaced work. It is now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no: IB 166).
