Activities

Field Visit (12 October 1987)

Cropmarks 420m NW of Old Mains of Rattray, and immediately S of the main road between Rattray and Alyth, have revealed a roughly egg-shaped enclosure measuring about 54m E-W by 40m within a 1.5m wide ditch. The site lies on the southern edge of a broad undulating terrace which falls quite sharply to the S.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 12 October 1987.

Aerial Photographic Transcription (25 January 1988)

An aerial transcription was produced from oblique aerial photographs. Information from Historic Environment Scotland (BM) 31 March 2017.

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (June 1992)

NO24NW 44 2041 4568 and 2045 4568

Aerial photography has revealed a pear-shaped enclosure (measuring 54m by 42m within a narrow ditch) which occupies the top of a knoll immediately S of the public road A926. Within the interior, there are a curving mark (which probably indicates the site of a souterrain) and also a pit-circle with a diameter of 7m (which probably indicates the post-ring of a timber house). A further cropmark of souterrain-like form was revealed due E and in the same field (at NO 2045 2568).

Cists (NO24NW 20) were found at this location in the nineteenth century. Visited by RCAHMS (SH) June 1992.

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (26 February 2014)

Following a review of the aerial photographs, the pit circle classification has been removed and replaced with roundhouse as it represents the post-ring of a later prehistoric roundhouse.

Information from RCAHMS (KMM) 26 February 2014
