Cairn [NR]
OS 1:10,000 map, 1971.
The Hillock of Garth is an ovate cairn, 22.5m long, NNW-SSE x 19.5m broad and 1.6m. high situated on moorland at HY 4704 0679. A large pit and smaller holes recently dug in the top show the cairn to consist of stone slabs, but there is no cist or internal chambering visible.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (NKB) 12 April 1964.
Revised at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (ISS) 21 May 1973.
This cairn is situated on the boundary between the parishes of Kirkwall & St Ola and St Andrews & Deerness.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 9 February 2001.
Field Visit (21 July 1928)
Mound, near Garth.
This mound, which is some 60 ft.[18.2m] long, 55 ft. [16.7m] broad, and 6 ft. [1.8m] high, stands about half a mile SW of the farm of Garth on a moorland ridge about 200ft above sea-level. Its major axis lies NW and SE. It is not marked on the OS map as an antiquity but its position suggests that it is of prehistoric date. The upper surface of the mound has been somewhat broken up by peat-cutting, but the whole is now covered with peat and heather, which prevent the determination of its internal composition.
