Archaeology Notes

NH52NW 41 5296 2850

During the construction of the visitor centre at Urquhart Castle, the remains of a timber structure were discovered beneath the proposed car parking area. Excavations revealed a building of bi-partite design defined by a central line of posts and substantial wall slots, measuring 20m by 7m. The division of the building appeared to relate to a large, possibly domestic space, with an open 'workshop' of lean-to construction along the eastern side.

Significant quantities of artefactual and environmental material were recovered during the excavation, and a full programme of post-excavation analysis is intended as part of the wider pre-development archaeological programme.

Initial examination of the material culture from the structure suggests a date between the 13th and 15th centuries AD.
