Scope and Content The construction of Urquhart Castle in a commanding position on Loch Ness started in 1230. Robert the Bruce claimed it in 1308. It declined from military use as defences moved further N to Inverness. It was blown up by government forces in 1692. Many features remain including the Great Hall. It is currently (2020) a huge visitor attraction, owned by Historic Scotland, and is a fine example of a medieval castle.
