Publication Account (1974)

Grovepark Mills built from 1857 for Mitchell and Whytlaw, power loom manufacturers and enlarged 1878/1888/1896/1897 and 1900. The main block built 1878, is on an L plan, four storey and attic, 8 by 13 bay (outside), with cast iron columns supporting timber beams and floors. The walls are red and white brick with curious moulded brick quoins. On the east side is a small single storey engine house, with a Flemish gable, and on the north is a larger engine house, 5 bays long, with round headed windows. There are two associated blocks of weaving sheds, one 6 bays, the other 8 bays long, with the normal timber north light roofs suported on cast iron columns. There is a tall iron-bound brick chimney, and a neat 2 storey villa, with pillared porch, which served as an office. Demolished in 1969.
