Archaeology Notes

NJ45SW 19 42942 51129

(Location cited as NJ 429 511). Strathisla Distillery, founded 1876 by George Taylor. A most attractive small distillery. The stillhouse, offices and some of the stores are unchanged since at least the late 19th century. The main addition is a three-storey block of maltings with double kiln vents. A waterwheel has been added as a 'feature' by the present owners.

J R Hume 1977.

NJ 429 511 Building recording was undertaken during March to June 2006 at the filling store of Strathisla distillery prior to its alteration. This building, part of a complex dating from the late 18th century, is being converted from a filling store, offices and canteen to form part of the visitor centre and guest accommodation at the distillery. The distillery was founded in 1785 and elements of the S part of the filling store may date from that period. Additions and alterations are obscured by later finishing but the filling store has at least four consecutive elements culminating in the recent addition of a harled office block. The historic fabric will be largely unaltered by the development.
