Desk Based Assessment (19 June 2017)
Washington Grain Mills, photographed by Professor Hume in 1965, have since been demolished and the site is now open and undeveloped. Built in 1849, the mills are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Lanark Sheet 1858, VI.10), occupying the N part of a city-centre block between Washington Street on the E and a narrow lane known as ‘Ropewalk’ on the W. On the N the mill fronted another, un-named lane, but the main access was probably through the covered pend off Washington Street. The mills were extended in 1874-5 for J and R Snodgrass, and a further tower block built in 1897 by R Ewan, architect.
