Scope and Content Crown Flour Mills, Nos 66-8 Washington Street, Glasgow The first part of these mills was built in 1862 for John Ure & Son, and it was subsequently extended. It would originally have been designed to grind using millstones. This view shows the rear elevation of the mills, revealed by demolition of buildings in Clydeferry Street to make way for the approach viaduct for the Kingston Bridge over the River Clyde. Its rubble construction suggests that this was the original mill. By 1967 the works was owned by Matthew White & Co Ltd, cereal millers and packers. It has since closed and been demolished. John Ure, the original builder, became Lord Provost of Glasgow, and was the initiator of improved sewerage for the city. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
