The furnace is fuelled by clean endothermic gas (produced by a generator on the other side of the bay), and heat treatment is required for the hardening of components of machines, such as gears.

The furnace is fuelled by clean endothermic gas (produced by a generator on the other side of the bay), and heat treatment is required for the hardening of components of machines, such as gears.

This large factory complex is situated to the S side of Motherwell adjacent to what was Ravenscraig and Lanarkshire Steel Works. Dating mostly from the early and mid-20th Century, the works was established in 1899 by Anderson Boyes, mining engineers, and specialising in the manufacture of mining machinery, and intrinsically safe electrical equipment for use underground in mines. The factory buildings comprise blocks of mostly red-brick steel-framed buildings, each consisting of long bays designed to house groups of machine tools devoted to specialised activities within the manufacturing process.
After a succession of takeovers, the factory was due to be shut down by its American owners in on 6 March 1998, after which all but the new 'gear cells' building and associated heat-treatment plant (which were to remain as an independent operation) were to be demolished. Closure was not caused by a fall in demand for mining machinery, but more because the demand had shifted away from traditional European markets.
