Archaeology Notes

NT37SW 213.00 3415 7245

NT 3417 7230 Monitoring of site investigation works was carried out at the site of the former Brunton Wire Works which covers an area of about 4ha.

The works predominantly exposed reworked mixed sediments incorporating industrial waste material overlying a natural sand and gravel. The material recovered was almost exclusively post-medieval in origin, including 19th-century waster pits from the Newbigging Pottery during the ownership of W A Gray.

Activities

Excavation (January 1993)

NT 342 724 An integrated programme of archaeological survey and excavation was completed in January 1993 on the site of a proposed food market development. The results of this short but intensive exercise demonstrated that the present wireworks factory buildings were erected on a green field site, which in turn sealed medieval deposits. Artefactual evidence suggests a hiatus between the 15th/16th century and 19th century, which may be connected with the presence of a French fort built in 1548.

The excavated medieval deposits appear to be agriculturally derived, covering a period from the 13th to 15th century and probably relate to backlots associated with the river frontage occupation.

Excavation (February 2009 - March 2009)

NT 342 724 An excavation was carried out in February–March 2009 across the site of the former Brunton Wireworks prior to its redevelopment. The seven trenches excavated recorded an underground network of tunnels, vents, flues and associated features relating to the wireworks’ heating and steam distribution system. The recovery of waster material, marmalade jars and ginger beer bottles provided artefactural evidence for the use of the site as a dumping ground for the 19th-century Newbigging pottery.

Archaeological Evaluation (November 2009 - December 2009)

An archaeological evaluation of the former Brunton Wireworks was carried out by Headland Archaeology, November to December 2009.

Archaeological Evaluation (September 2018 - October 2018)

NT 34220 72490 A trial trenching evaluation was carried out, September – October 2018, in advance of the development of residential flats at the former Tesco Store site, Mall Avenue. The site lies within the area formerly occupied by mid-20th-century buildings associated with the Brunton Wireworks. The evaluation established that significant disturbance at least to the level of the natural had taken place across the area prior to the construction of the wireworks. A number of features associated with the wireworks were identified (drainage pipes, creosote-soaked timber, sleeper beams, brick walls, concrete foundations etc). The only other features were two shallow parallel linear features of indeterminate date and function.
