Activities

Desk Based Assessment (7 September 2017)

Nothing now remains of the transit shed that once stood on the pier that forms the NE side of the East Harbour (NS27NE 32), which was built about 1860 and measured 133m by 17m transversely. Single storey with cast iron columns and window frames, it was served by a rail track along its north east side, as depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Renfrewshire 1896, Sheet 002.06). It replaced two smaller sheds, measuring 64m by 8m and 57m by 8m respectively, that were depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Renfrew 1864, Sheet II.6). The harbour’s quay walls were rebuilt in the late 1990s at which point the transit shed was demolished.
