Scope and Content East India Harbour, Greenock, Inverclyde This harbour was formed in 1805 to designs by John Rennie. It was later modified, and latterly had quays formed for the most part with sloping masonry walls supporting timber-piled quay edges. A dry dock was built on the west side in 1818, and another one was added in the 1950s. This shows the harbour from the north, looking through the entrance to the south quay, with warehouse No 4, a late 19th-century addition to the quayside. The transit sheds on the left probably dated from about 1860. This harbour was built to serve vessels in the East Indian trade, but later became a harbour for coasting vessels. The dry docks were managed for many years by James Lamont & Co for ship repairing and refitting. In the 1990s the quays were rebuilt by Renfrewshire Enterprise, and the sheds demolished.
