Clyde-Built: A Study of the Clyde Shipbuilding Industry as represented by shipwrecks within the Clyde River and Estuary.

As part of the Clyde-built project, an initial assessment of the known records for shipping losses was undertaken within the Clyde River and Estuary .

A number of sources were consulted. Characterising Scotland’s Marine Archaeological Resource database (Wessex Archaeology 2012); Canmore (RCAHMS NMR database obtained in November 2014); The UKHO Wrecks and Obstructions Database (obtained via MarineFIND in

November 2014, with most recent data download from UKHO in November 2014) and Wrecks reported in Clyde Shipwrecks and Argyll Shipwrecks (Moir and Crawford 2003 and 2004).

1001926	RECORDING	DESK BASED ASSESSMENT	The Lady Margaret was a wooden West-Indiaman, built in 1769 (Moir and Crawford 2004: 71). The vessel wrecked in 1770, while registered to Glasgow. No seabed remains are recorded in the exact position given by Canmore for the Lady Margaret however c. 120m to the north the UKHO record diver sightings of a wreck from which cannon are thought to have been salvaged in 1790. Documentary evidence records the loss of a Spanish vessel in this location. The UKHO survey details suggest that cannon were found at a depth of 3m and magnetic anomalies were found in depths of 4m in 1989, however subsequent surveys by the ADU including a magnetometer survey, recorded no evidence for the Spanish wreck. Only a table-top tomb slab from an 18th century wreck was recorded (from UKHO ID 4084). It is possible that both this and the earlier records of cannon may relate to wreckage associated with the Lady Margaret. [...]	27 November 2014
1001965	RECORDING	DESK BASED ASSESSMENT	A number of vessels under the name 'Moonlight' are recorded in connection with the Clyde. The vessel under discussion here was constructed in 1872 and lost in 1877 (information from Canmore ID 218855). There is no record of a vessel under the name Moonlight corresponding with this build-date on www.clydesite.co.uk [accessed 01 December 2014] suggesting the vessel may not be Clyde-built.
