Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 10, Benevean Dam from the north bank, head over crest 1 foot, 5 December 1954 Benevean Dam was completed by 1951. It was built by contractors John Cochrane and Sons Ltd and measures 177m long and 37m high. It is a 'Mass Gravity'-type dam which resists the power of water with the power of gravity by its sheer weight. The concrete walls of the dam are thinnest at the top of the reservoir where water pressure is light, and much thicker at the base where water pressure is greatest. This view shows the Benevean Dam completed. The dam is designed so that In flood conditions water spills over the curved crest of the dam, as seen here. This dam impounds the water of Loch Benevean to supply it to the Fasnakyle Power Station. Benevean Dam was built as part of the Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project which was the first part of the Affric/Beauly scheme to be commissioned by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. The Affric/ Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
