Administrative History The North of Scotland Hydro-electric Board was established in 1943 by the Hydro-electric Development (Scotland) Act, to undertake the development of water power in the Highlands and Islands for public electricity supply. These duties encompassed the design, construction and management of hydroelectric projects across Scotland. The board's duties and area of operation were further expanded in 1947 by the Electricity Act, which nationalised the electricity supply industry throughout Great Britain. At this time the board took over the assets of the Grampian Electricity Supply Company and other private bodies producing electricity in Northern Scotland. The board was dissolved in March 1990 and privatised in June 1991.
