Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 10, Benevean Dam, upstream view from north bank showing granite pitching in bucket, 4 October 1950 Benevean, a 'Mass Gravity'-type dam (resisting the power of water with the power of gravity by its sheer weight), was completed by 1951. It was built by contractors John Cochrane and Sons Ltd. as part of the Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project and measures 177m long and 37m high. A 5km long tunnel extends from the dam to the hydro-electric generating station at Fasnakyle. This view shows the Benevean Dam nearing completion. The dam is designed so that In flood conditions water spills over the curved crest of the dam, into the 'bucket', where it is calmed before flowing down the river Affric. The 'bucket' is faced with granite to resist erosion by the force of the water. The Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project was the first part of the Affric/Beauly scheme to be built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
