Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 10, Benevean Dam, view along centre line showing excavation to final levels fro blocks nos 12, 13, 14, 2 March 1949 Benevean Dam was built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board as part of the Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project. The dam is linked by tunnels to Loch Mullardoch and Fasnakyle power station. Excavation of these tunnels began in 1948 and both are over 5km long. This is the trench being excavated for the start of construction of the Benevean Dam, which will be built of mass concrete. The trench is being excavated to bedrock to ensure the stability of the dam, which impounds the water in Loch Benevean and feeds the Fasnakyle Power Station. The Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project was the first part of the Affric/Beauly scheme to be built. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Great care was taken in the design and construction of the hydro-electric works in order to minimise their impact on the fine scenery in the area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
