Scope and Content Whaling Station, Bunaveneadar, Harris, Western Isles, from north-west To the right is the roofless building which was used as a laboratory at the whaling station. Single-storeyed and three-bayed, it is probably built from stone which has been harled. To the left is a part-circular base for a boiler. Bunaveneadar opened in 1904, a year after commercial whaling began in Scotland. It operated until 1914 when it closed down; it reopened in 1920, but closed again by 1929. During these two periods the number of whales killed by the five Scottish whaling stations totalled over 10,000. Bunaveneadar opened again between 1950 and 1952, but due to financial problems had to close permanently. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Bunaveneadar is situated on the west coast of Harris.
