Scope and Content Whaling Station, Bunaveneadar, Harris, Western Isles, from south In the foreground are the few scattered remains of the stone-built villa which was the home for the manager of the whaling station. To the left, in the background, is the byre which was for the use of the manager, and up the slope to the right is the laboratory. Although industrial whaling only began in the 20th century, whales had been killed for many centuries in Scotland, especially in the Northern Isles. The whales were driven onto a beach, if spotted nearby, by people in boats who surrounded and chased them. Sometimes whales simply stranded themselves on the beach. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Bunaveneadar is situated on the west coast of Harris.
