Scope and Content Whaling Station, Bunaveneadar, Harris, Western Isles, from north Today, little remains of the large whaling station, which was opened in 1904. To the right is a byre which was built from brick salvaged from a demolished boiler house chimney. In the centre is the laboratory, and in the distance is the extant boiler house chimney, also built from brick. To the far left is a pig house. The whales which were processed here were usually caught near St Kilda, an island to the west of Harris. In 'The Western Isles of Scotland' written by Dean Munro in 1549 it was written that whales were in 'a cove 2 fadoms deep at the ebb sea, uses Whytuns (whitings) to be slain with huiks'. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Bunaveneadar is situated on the west coast of Harris.
