Scope and Content These are various finds uncovered during the excavations at Old Windsor. On the left there are two shards of medieval window glass which would have originally been clear with a green tinge. The glass has darkened due to deterioration through long-term burial. Other finds include fragments of various decorated bone combs, a bone pin and a medieval coin. Glass was used in a number ways by the Saxons: for drinking vessels, window glass, jewellery and enamelling. It is quite unusual to find glass windows in buildings other than churches and the presence of it here indicates the importance of this site. Old Windsor was an Anglo-Saxon royal palace and the predecessor of Windsor Castle. Excavations carried out by Brian Hope-Taylor in the 1950s revealed the remains of a settlement dating from 600AD. This settlement expanded during the 7th and 8th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
