Scope and Content The collection comprises primary archive from excavations, including notebooks, photographs and drawings; archaeological and historical research material; teaching material and committee papers. The collection also includes much personal artwork, mostly paper, but also printing blocks, and also personal papers and family photographs.
Archive History The collection was presented to RCAHMS following Hope-Taylor's death.
System of Arrangement The collection has been sorted into: archaeological archives (by project); archaeological research material, correspondence and teaching material; material relating to Hope-Taylor's media career; draft texts; minutes; personal papers; personal artwork; archaeological artwork; books, journals and other publications; miscellaneous.
Access Conditions For conservation reasons, some material is not available for consultation.
Administrative History Brian Hope-Taylor (1923-2001) was an archaeologist and artist who was especially noted for his work on Anglo-Saxon and early medieval sites in Scotland and England. He also taught in the archaeology department at the University of Cambridge during the 1960s and 1970s. Always keen to promote public interest in archaeology, Hope-Taylor had a successful television career as a broadcaster.
Finding Aids A detailed database compiled in Microsoft Access during the initial sort of the collection in 2002 is available. A report summarising Hope-Taylor's career and the work of the project is also available.
