Scope and Content 'Kingsbury beast', Old Windsor, Berkshire This gilt-bronze object was discovered during excavations at Old Windsor. Known as the 'Kingsbury Beast', the function of this object is unclear. It may have been purely decorative. The 'Kingsbury Beast' was probably a high status object but not all the finds from Old Windsor were so elaborate. Viewed overall, the artefacts from this site can provide a wealth of information on how people lived and worked in the past. Old Windsor was an Anglo-Saxon royal palace and the predecessor of Windsor Castle. Excavations carried out by Brian Hope-Taylor in the 1950s revealed the remains of a settlement dating from 600AD. This settlement expanded during the 7th and 8th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
