Scope and Content Plan of first floor of first class house and second floor of second class house, Gartnavel Royal Hospital, No 1055 Great Western Road, Glasgow Gartnavel Royal Hospital was built in the early 1840s to replace Glasgow's first Royal Asylum for the mentally ill in Parliamentary Road. Gartnavel, an imposing, Tudor-style institution, was designed by Charles Wilson (1810-63), a Glasgow architect, influential in the development of the city. This plan shows the two distinct buildings on Wilson's original design which were to be joined by a chapel and arcade although the chapel was not built until 1904. On the left, the East House accommodated working class patients, while the West House, on the right, housed wealthier patients. Patients were rigidly segregated not only by class but also by sex. Male and female wings were also clearly marked for each house. Airing courts, where patients took fresh air behind high walls, were also segregated. It was not until the 1870s that walls surrounding asylum airing courts began to be demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
