Scope and Content Interior of loaded kiln, Cruden Bay Brick & Tile Works, Aberdeenshire Established in 1902 by a Mr Cruikshank, the works were producing 12,000 bricks per day by 1906. Field drains were also made in 1906 when 32 men and boys were employed. In 1947 the works were extended and modernised and by 1960 five million bricks a year were being produced. The works closed in 1990. This shows the inside of the kiln showing a mixture of bricks and field drains. The perforated bricks are 'common' bricks and field drains (centre) were produced in three sizes: 3-inch, 4-inch and 6-inch. During the 1980s, Cruden Bay was one of only three works in Scotland still producing drain tiles. The area of the works was extended to eight acres in 1960 to accommodate the new machinery. The annual output of 5 million bricks used 20,000 tons of red clay and required the labour of 30 men. There were two machines to make the field drains, one in a large drying shed, the other in the drying loft above the kiln. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
