Scope and Content Fawcett pan mill, Cruden Bay Brick & Tile Works, Aberdeenshire Established in 1902 by a Mr Cruikshank, the works were producing 12,000 bricks per day by 1906. Field drains were also made in 1906 when 32 men and boys were employed. In 1947 the works were extended and modernised and by 1960 five million bricks a year were being produced. The works closed in 1990. This shows the works' Fawcett pan mill for grinding clay/rock into a fine consistency. It consisted of two rollers circulating around a circular pan which got rid of excess stones after which the clay passed into the mixer and was extruded in long columns. This pan mill was made by T C Fawcett Ltd of Leeds. The works were situated on the Cruden Bay Branch of the Great North of Scotland Railway, about 914.4m from Cruden Bay Station, and had a siding over 183m long. It was estimated that the clay bed which extended from the side of the railway and covered several hundred acres could yield 75 million bricks per acre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
