Scope and Content Fan room and mine vent shaft outlet from the south-west, Carbrook Clay Mine, Falkirk The fireclay industry was of national importance for Scotland during the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Fireclay was used as the main material in the manufacture of toilet furniture and sewer pipes. In 1951 Scotland produced almost 60% (by value) of all British unprocessed fireclay. The Carbrook Clay Mine lies to the north-west of Falkirk and was opened c.1953 and closed c.1982. This shows the fan room which was under the pitched roof (left) and the mine vent shaft outlet which was under the flat roof (right). The fan room contained a fan that could blow air down the mine to provide ventilation for miners working down there. Air could also be drawn out of the mine from the outlet. Bricks made from fireclay are able to withstand high temperatures without melting or softening. Fireclay bricks can be used in both industrial and domestic buildings and are therefore often found in steelwork furnaces and household fireplaces. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
