Scope and Content East and West Old Docks, Leith Docks, Edinburgh These docks were built in 1800-6 (East Old Dock) and 1810-17 (West Old Dock), to designs by John Rennie, engineer. Both docks were entered from the Water of Leith through a lock, spanned by a two-leaf, cast-iron swing bridge, replaced in the 1840s to the original design. This shows the docks from the east, looking through the entrance lock, with its swing bridge. There are warehouses on the left of the lock and along the south (left-hand) side of the docks. The buildings on the right belonged to a firm of ship repairers. These docks were in-filled in 1967-8, though the lock and swing bridge, as scheduled ancient monuments, were retained. The site of the docks now serves as car parking for Victoria Quay, the headquarters of the Scottish Executive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
