Scope and Content Sanday and the south part of Canna looking east-south-east towards Rum, Small Isles, Inner Hebrides, Highland Canna, Sanday and Rum form part of the Small Isles National Scenic Area and lie between the mainland and the Outer Hebrides. Canna and Sanday were gifted to the National Trust for Scotland in 1981 by the late Dr J L Campbell. Rum was bought in 1957 by the National Conservancy Council (now Scottish Natural Heritage). The south part of Canna lies in the foreground and to the left, Sanday is in the centre right. The north-western tip of Rum can be seen in the background to the right. Canna harbour is visible (centre top) between Canna and Sanday. With their rich and fertile soils and sheltered natural harbour, Canna and Sanday have produced evidence of settlement from the Neolithic period (c.4000-2000 BC). Earlier evidence of settlement (c.7500 BC) has been found on Rum. A landscape survey of Canna and Sanday was undertaken by the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland in 1994 (RCAHMS Broadsheet 5). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
