Scope and Content Cromarty and the Cromarty Firth, Highland This view is from the north-east looking across Cromarty (centre) and part of the Cromarty Firth. In the centre the small harbour can be seen and a large three sided complex that was once a sailcloth and hemp rope-making works built in 1774 by George Ross. The large pier running from the right of the image is associated with the oil industry fabrication yard at Nigg. Situated on the Black Isle at the mouth of the Cromarty Firth, Cromarty was once a major fishing port and trading centre from the 12th century onwards. It was also a Royal Burgh until 1685. The present town is largely the creation of George Ross, who purchased the Cromarty Estate and town in 1772. The Gaelic Chapel and graveyard (centre left), was built by Ross in 1783 to serve the largely Gaelic community that had come from the West to work in his factories. Cromarty is the birthplace of Hugh Miller (1802-1856) well-known geologist, writer, stonemason and newspaper editor. His monument stands to the right of the chapel.
