Scope and Content Cromarty, Black Isle, Highland The stretch of water above Cromarty is the narrow entrance to the Cromarty Firth. The Firth was once a rich herring fishery. The land at the top is North Sutor. The large three sided complex (centre left) is a former sailcloth and rope-making factory built in 1774 by George Ross. Ross also built the Gaelic Chapel (centre right) in 1783 to serve the largely Gaelic community that came to work in his factories from the West. Situated on the Black Isle at the mouth of the Cromarty Firth, Cromarty was once a major fishing port and trading centre from the 12th century onwards. It was also a Royal Burgh until 1685. The present town is largely the creation of George Ross, who purchased the town in 1772. Cromarty is the birthplace of Hugh Miller (1802-1856) the well-known geologist and writer.
