Scope and Content Bonthrone Maltings, Pitlessie, Fife This was a rural maltings, latterly making distillery malt, but probably originally built to make brewery malt. It consisted of two long ranges of malting floors, with three kilns a the west end, and a three-bay range of malt stores. This view shows the maltings from the north-east end, with the three-storey malting floors in the foreground, and one of the kilns beyond. The tank on the gable was used to supply water to the tanks in which the barley was steeped at the start of malting. This maltings, with others at Falkland and Ladybank belonged to the Bonthrone family, who owned a brewery and a distillery. The maltings were latterly owned by The Distillers' Co Ltd, and operated until 1968, when supplanted by new central maltings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
