Scope and Content The former 'Dominie's' House (later the Cemetery Bothy), St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Colinton, Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Parish Church, surrounded on all four sides by its churchyard, stands in the elbow of the Water of Leith at Colinton village. The present building dates from 1908, but there has been a church on or near this site for over 900 years. This stone cottage lies to the south of the church, at the boundary to an extension to the churchyard. Built c.1811 for the 'dominie', the village schoolmaster, by the mason, John Fraser of Colinton, it was later used as a bothy for grave-diggers. The dominie, who in 1843 was employed at a salary of £34 per annum, not only had to teach his pupils English, writing and arithmetic, but had other church duties, such as session clerk, clerk to the 'heritors', and collector of parochial assessments.
