Scope and Content St John's Episcopal Church, Princes Street, Edinburgh, looking north from Lothian Road St John's Episcopal Church, at the west end of Princes Street Gardens, was completed in 1818 at a cost of £18,000. Designed by William Burn in the Perpendicular style, it has a splendid interior modelled on St George's Chapel, Windsor. This beautiful church has a nave and aisles, but no transepts. The nave is divided into eight bays, with buttresses and pinnacles. The 40m high square tower was originally topped with an octagonal lantern. In the small churchyard to the south of the church, is the tomb of Sir Henry Raeburn, 'the prince of Scottish portrait painters', who died in Edinburgh in 1832. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
