Scope and Content View of Calton Hill and the Royal High School, Edinburgh The Royal High School was founded in 1825 to replace the existing building at the end of Infirmary Street, which it had outgrown. The new building was designed on a grand scale to link in with the monuments on Calton Hill above. Up on Calton Hill work may be seen in progress on the National Monument, designed to be a replica of the Parthenon but never completed when money soon ran out. To the left stands Nelson's Monument, designed as an upturned telescope. This view is taken from the Canongate churchyard. Though the Canongate had once been a separate burgh of elegant spacious houses, by the 19th century it had become cramped and squalid. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
