Scope and Content St Andrew Square, Edinburgh Hopetoun Monument and Dundas House Dundas House, occupying a prominent site on the east side of St Andrew Square, has been the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland since 1825. The house was built in 1774 for the wealthy Sir Laurence Dundas. The Hopetoun Monument, a dismounted equestrian statue of John, Earl of Hopetoun, Governor of the Royal Bank of Scotland, 1802-3, was made in bronze in 1824-9 by Thomas Campbell. It was put here in 1834 rather than in its intended site in Charlotte Square. The Royal Bank of Scotland was only one of many banks, insurance companies and legal firms to occupy premises in St Andrew Square, which began life as a fashionable residential area, and has been called one of the wealthiest squares in the world.
