Scope and Content Early 19th century view of General Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh In 1752 a series of 'Proposals', initiated by the then Lord Provost George Drummond, suggested improvements to the City including the construction of a merchants' exchange, a building to house the public records of Scotland, and a New Town. Register House, designed by Robert and James Adam in 1774 as a public records office, had more than 100 vaulted rooms, each separated by thick stone walls to inhibit fire, and a primitive form of ducted central heating to keep the documents damp-free. Before 1778, the public records of Scotland had been kept for generations in 'two laigh rooms under the Inner Session House' in the Old Town. They were 'in a perishing condition', suffering from attacks by mice, rats and other vermin. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
