Scope and Content Gartnavel Royal Hospital, No 1055 Great Western Road, Glasgow Gartnavel Royal Hospital, designed by Charles Wilson, a Glasgow architect, was built in the early 1840s and superseded the first Glasgow Royal Asylum for Lunatics in Parliamentary Road which was too small. In 1931 Gartnavel became Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital, taking its present name in 1963. This shows part of the imposing façade of this castellated, Tudor-style institution. Considered a model asylum, it provided a standard for subsequent asylums and, after the 1857 Lunacy (Scotland) Act was passed, its design was chosen by the Board of Lunacy for early District Asylums. Charles Wilson (1810-63) was the son of a Glasgow builder and trained in the office of David Hamilton of Glasgow before setting up his own practice in 1837. A shy, rather quiet man, he was influenced by French architecture following a visit to Paris and was an influential figure in Glasgow's development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
